Reimagining Hamilton International Airport in Record Time

Airport Design for What’s Next

Jul 31, 2025

The most impactful airport transformations go beyond infrastructure upgrades — they pave the way for long-term regional growth. And that impact isn’t limited to major hubs.

Small-and-medium-sized airports play a vital role in driving local economies and expanding regional connectivity, making investments in airport development is a key contributor to the success of the region. According to the Canadian Airports Council’s Economic Impact Study, a single regional flight can support up to 210 jobs and generate $41.2 million in economic output.

John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) is the perfect example: the regional airport is a key gateway to business and tourism in Southern Ontario. It recently completed a passenger terminal transformation to modernize the airport and streamline operations for an enhanced passenger experience.

This milestone transformation coincided with the addition of coast-to-coast service from Porter Airlines, which launched services in June from Hamilton to Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, and Vancouver, delivering a seamless and convenient travel experience.

Porter Airlines saw the same potential in Hamilton International Airport that we did. They’re known for delivering an elevated economy experience, and we wanted that same feeling to carry through the entire terminal — especially as passenger traffic increases.

Airport redevelopments are complex projects, but the right group of partners can turn a shared vision into a reality. In early summer 2025, Vantage Group, TradePort, key municipal leaders from The City of Hamilton, and project and community stakeholders came together to cut the ribbon on the refreshed passenger terminal.

From the moment travelers arrive, they’re greeted by a newly expanded frontage designed to improve curb operations as well as other features that streamline the drop-off and pick-up processes.

Once they’re inside, they’ll notice a brighter and more spacious terminal with design elements that create a more intuitive wayfinding experience. Check-in, security, and baggage claim areas have been streamlined with digital signage, lighting upgrades, and design finishes inspired by the natural beauty of the region.

Delivering Real Impact in Record Time – Airport Redevelopment in 102 Days

From the planning stages to the ribbon cutting, this terminal upgrade was completed on time and on budget, in a record 102 days — a true testament to the strong collaboration between Vantage, TradePort, the City of Hamilton, and our construction partners PCL Construction and Stantec.

Leveraging Vantage’s global network of expertise, the team applied insights from past projects to guide decisions on everything from materials to layout. From airline and cargo partners to concessionaires, regulatory entities, security, and customs, every team played a role in delivering a seamless, modern passenger experience.

What people have always loved about Hamilton International is how accessible it is, and we’ve only made that better. We often say it’s just 200 steps from the curb to your departure gate, which really reflects our goal of making travel easier for every passenger, whether they’re new or returning.

Celebrating the City of Hamilton – Airport Design with Local Flair in Mind

Meaningful transformations instill a sense of the region’s identity throughout the terminal. This is reflected in airport design choices, food and beverage options, and retail offerings — all of which should celebrate the surrounding community and leave a positive impression on those passing through.

At Hamilton International, we took inspiration from natural features unique to the region and embedded them throughout to create a sense of place. As a tribute to Hamilton’s oldest tree, the white oak, oak finishes are incorporated into the check-in counters, on the terminal’s main feature wall and at the entrance to the terminal.

The sense of place is also felt through the familiar aroma of Tim Horton’s, a beloved Canadian staple, which sits alongside local concessionaires including Dark Horse Espresso, which bring a taste of Hamilton to the terminal through locally roasted coffee, freshly prepared meals, and local beer and wine.

Rooted in Community: Airport Development with a Long-Term Vision for Growth

These developments are part of a broader, $400 million commitment made through our 49-year lease with the City of Hamilton. This long-term investment in upgrading passenger amenities and adding new air service will support the airport’s sustainable growth, positioning it as an economic engine and a hub for enhanced connectivity — now and in the future.

Our investment strategy was designed to adapt to the airport’s evolving needs in the coming decades — whether that means improving infrastructure, increasing cargo capacity, or supporting land development. The refresh project prioritized high-traffic areas essential to today’s passengers while planning for future growth, knowing that some spaces will be repurposed as part of future expansion.

Investing in What’s Next: Hamilton Airport’s Next Chapter

Strategic investment is not only about elevating the travel experience but also laying the foundation for the future. The completion of this terminal transformation is part of a broader vision to build a world-class airport that embodies the community it serves.

A key pillar of this vision is sustainability. Dedicated funds have been set aside to ensure Hamilton International Airport achieves net-zero carbon emissions by the end of the decade — an essential step toward reducing the airport’s environmental impact.

Through our long-term partnership with the City of Hamilton and our project collaborators, we’ll continue to build an airport that reflects the region’s potential — an efficient, modern travel hub that shows the community’s pride.
