LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Redevelopment Receives First Envision Platinum Award for Commitment to Sustainable Practices and Resilience

Aug 22, 2019

The LaGuardia Airport Terminal B redevelopment project has been awarded the first-ever Envision Platinum award, by The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s (ISI) awards program, which recognizes the project for its industry leading approach to sustainability and resilience.

Led by Vantage Airport Group, LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP) is the private company operating and redeveloping LaGuardia’s Terminal B, and brought on Skanska-Walsh as the design build joint venture, which received the award on August 21, 2019.

Projects are evaluated based on a robust set of criteria, including traditional factors, such as reducing emissions, recycling materials, and using renewable energy sources, as well as more holistic indicators of social and economic sustainability, such as minimizing construction impacts, providing employment opportunities for local residents, resilient design and improving mobility and access.

LGP worked closely with its partners, including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, to create a design and construction approach that helped deliver on its priority to build a terminal that offers a first-class guest experience with a minimal environmental footprint.

Other sustainable features of the terminal include:

  • An eco-friendly baggage system that will use at least 37% less energy compared to older systems;
  • Water-saving plumbing fixtures and energy-saving LED lighting;
  • Use of ceiling tiles, carpet and drywall that are made in part from recycled content; and
  • Water stations for refilling reusable water bottles, saving hundreds of thousands of single-use plastic bottles every year.

The LaGuardia Terminal B project, valued at $5.1B (including $4B in construction value), is the largest public-private partnership in US aviation history. The redevelopment includes a new 35-gate terminal, a Central Hall, a parking garage, related roadways and supporting infrastructure – all with innovative construction phasing, including building over-top of the current operation, to allow the terminal to remain fully functional while under construction.

Vantage is a one-third equity partner in LaGuardia Gateway Partners and is responsible for construction oversight as well as operations and management of Terminal B through 2050.
